Description
Each November 15th, Japanese families celebrate Shichi-Go-San, a day of prayer for the healthy growth of children. Girls age 7 and 3 wearing ceremonial kimonos and boys age 5 and 3 wearing haori jackets and hakama trousers visit a Shinto shrine with their parents. Afterward, they are presented with chitose-ame -- long, thin red-and-white candy symbolizing longevity and packaged in a bag with cranes and turtles on it. The festival dates back to the Heian Period (794 - 1185), and its name translates as Seven-Five-Three.
