Description
On our week's vacation on the Greek island of Crete, the high point was a two-hour guided walk around the Bronze Age site of Knossos, home of bull-leaping acrobats, the six-acre palace of King Minos, the Minotaur, a labyrinth supposedly constructed by Daedalus, and many other legends. The site was discovered in 1878, and excavations were begun in 1900 by English archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans. They continued for 35 years. The steps in this photo were probably constructed between 1700 ad 1400 B.C. In their day, they doubtless saw a lot of use, but now they lead nowhere. Perhaps someday, new discoveries will provide a clue to what lay above them.
